First Black Mormon Polygamist
Brigham Young wore many Hats. He had to make a determination during the Debates on Slavery in regards to which side Utah would take. In 1832, Elijah Ables, was called as the first African American priesthood holder by Joseph Smith to be a Seventy. Shortly after that, they were cast out of Missouri for wanting to abolish slavery. When the Saints started their journey out west in 1847, an African American convert named William McCrary began practicing Polygamy and taken on multiple white women as wives. But that wasn’t the reason for his excommunication. Things got really ugly he when started claiming to be a prophet while Brigham Young was away on a political trip to Washington DC to discuss Utah’s statehood. By the time he came back Orson Pratt had taken a decision to excommunicate McCrary. This is the beginning of the priesthood restriction on African Americans. There was no official D&C on the ban and it was not a revelation from God and therefore, racism must be condemned. The other African Americans are not liable for McCrary’s stupidity. This is no different from me being picked on after 9/11/2001 at the airport for looking like the terrorist.
